Pascom is a fully open IP telephone system. The client can be set up on all common operating systems. Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

The task

For the 2019 Update Release, Pascom wanted to integrate new features into their client. The new main features included channels, audio- and video-conferencing and screen sharing with moderator function. The current problems are not only visually but also interactively noticeable. The update offers the perfect opportunity to optimize and adjust some issues of the client.

Reviews and user journeys

After analyzing reviews and researches, I started sketching user journeys. The purpose of these user journeys was to understand as clearly as possible what the users expect from the client.

Modular design system

I started creating a component system whose parts are targeted for a 8dp baseline grid. However, icons, typography and some elements within the components can be aligned on a 4dp grid.

Icons

I decided to replace the old icon set with Google's Material Icons for simplicity, modernity and friendliness. Each icon is created using Google's design guidelines. Ongoing updates also ensure that the icon set is always up to date.

The old icons for the channel stood out and distracted. I wanted them to blend into the design unobtrusively and intelligibly.

The left sidebar

Users can use the sidebar to switch between channels, chats and favorites. Currently, client group chats are deleted when closing and not archived and have therefore no added value.

Now, channels can easily be created, sorted, muted, or added to favorites. Now there is a clear and meaningful hierarchy.

Messaging interface

Where users spend most of their time. The Messenger interface of Pascom has the most design inconsistencies. Most notable are: alignment, spacing, font sizes, and other interactive elements of the GUI.

Video call interface

Nowadays, everything is about collaboration. With the most advanced video conferencing solutions, teams can have conversations, send files, share the screen, and share ideas on whiteboards. Of course, Pascom can not sleep there!

Put everything together

Now that I've developed a consistent and working design language, I need to be sure that every single piece works for themselves. Then the client can be reassembled and published for the beta and usability tests.
